Guiding Good Choices

What is it?

Guiding Good Choices (GGC) is an evidence-based program for parents/ caregivers of youth ages 9-14. The Workshops with encourage caregivers learn to strengthen family bonds, improve parent-child communication, healthy conflict management and how to share their own guidelines with their young people.

How are the Workshops Designed?

Caregiver workshops provide practical skills and knowledge by attending five 2-hour sessions offered weekly.

GGC provides information and tools that help protect teens from the risks. Some topics include:

  • Why caregivers may need new skills as their children enter adolescence
  • Building strong family bonds
  • Setting and using family guidelines for behavior
  • Managing conflict and expressing anger constructively
  • Teaching children refusal skills

How to Ensure Fidelity

  • Two trained GGC Workshop Leaders co-deliver the workshops
  • Deliver all GGC sessions one per week
  • Deliver the curriculum as designed to help
  • Track participant attendance
  • Conduct parent evaluations at the end of each session

Workshop Leader Training and Requirements

To maintain fidelity, two trained GGC Workshop Leaders co-deliver the workshops with parents and caregivers.

The Center for Communities That Care offers virtual, interactive Workshop Leader Training 6 to 8 times per year. The training schedule and additional can be found on our training and events page.

This training prepares Workshop Leaders to lead GGC workshops in their community (both in-person and virtually) and will earn how the curriculum supports families by providing information and teaching skills.

The training also covers:

  • Keys to success for preventative parenting programs
  • Facilitation skills
  • The Social Development Strategy
  • Risk and protective factor focused prevention
  • How to handle difficult questions
  • Empowering parents and caregivers to make their own decisions

Ongoing Costs

  • License for each workshop leader
  • 1 year $240
  • 3 years $500
  • Technology required for delivery (internet access, laptop and online platform for virtual delivery)

  • Two trained and licensed workshop leaders deliver six 5-session workshops per year
  • Each workshop includes 10 families
  • Workshop leaders earn $1,000 per workshop (includes wage and fringe)

FAQs

Q: Can a license be transferred to someone else if the licensed staff member leaves?

A: Yes, please contact us with the name and email address of the new staff member and the name of the person relinquishing access.

Q: I bought a license; but I have not gotten login information, what should I do?

A: Search your email for ggc4kids and look in both your spam/junk folders. I you still can’t find you login contact us – a staff member will be able to help you.

Q: We are already implementing GGC in our community, but we have some questions. Who can help us with them?

A: Each month either a GGC Community of Practice session or Open Office hours are held for questions. If you are not receiving emails about those sessions or have an emergent question, please contact us and a GGC Specialist will get back to you.
